Alumni Association of Biomedical Engineering, FUTO Honours Engr. Dr. Taofik Oladimeji Azeez for Pioneering Contributions to Biomedical Engineering

The Alumni Association of Biomedical Engineering, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), recently celebrated Engr. Dr. T. O. Azeez with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the development of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and his longstanding commitment to mentorship.

Speaking at the event, Global Alumni President Kingsley C. Mamah traced the departments transformation from its origins in Physiotherapeutic Technology to a fully established Biomedical Engineering program. Mamah commended the pioneering efforts of early alumni such as Dr. Samuel Chidiebere Uzoechi, Mr. Martins Kelechi Ojiegbe, and others, who challenged curricular limitations and worked closely with university authorities and professional bodies to establish a viable biomedical program. He further praised Dr. Azeezs leadership in securing the departments historic transition from the School of Health Technology to the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology, aligning the program with global academic and industry standards.

Currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, FUTO, Engr. Dr. Azeez continues to advance research in diverse areas. His most recent publications focus on bioprocess and biopharmaceutics, biomaterials, including biopolymers for tissue and regenerative engineering, and the development of biomedical devices designed to improve healthcare delivery and safety.

The ceremony highlighted not only Dr. Azeezs administrative leadership but also his personal mentorship, academic guidance, and unwavering support for students and alumni. Several students and lecturers present at the occasion, as well as alumni who joined virtually, shared tremendous testimonies about the impact of Engr. Dr. T. O. Azeez on their academic and personal lives. The staff of the university present at the event expressed hope that other departments in the university would emulate this exemplary recognition initiated by the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

In addition to highlighting Dr. Azeezs contributions, Global Alumni President Kingsley C. Mamah took a moment to express his heartfelt gratitude to the BME alumni and students for their unwavering support and active participation in the success of the department. He also extended special thanks to the Dean, Engr. Prof. Remy Uche, for graciously chairing the occasion, presenting the award, and ensuring that the ceremony reflected the significance of the recognition.

The program was attended by distinguished academic leaders and university staff. In attendance were the Dean of SEET, Engr. Prof. Remy Uche; the Associate Dean, Engr. Dr. I. O. Arukalam; ASUU Chairperson, Dr. Chinedu Ihejirika, represented by Engr. Dr. Nnamdi A. Iheatur; Dr. Chris Ejiogu, former HOD of Environmental Management; Engr. Dr. A. O. Akande of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Engr. Dr. K. O. Ejeta of Biomedical Engineering; Mallam Nasiru of Environmental Management; Mr. Daberechukwu Daniel Nkwocha, Admin Staff of Center for Continuing Education; Engr. Koffreh Okon of Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering; Mrs. Felicity Arukalam of Biomedical Engineering; and Mrs. Charity Eyor, Biomedical Engineering Technician.

The event closed with a call for continued dedication and collaboration to sustain the departments legacy of excellence and to strengthen the role of Biomedical Engineering in advancing healthcare and technology in Nigeria and beyond. The gathering also underscored the need for the awardee, Engr. Dr. T. O. Azeez, to continue providing the visionary leadership and mentorship that have long distinguished his service to the department. His guidance remains vital in inspiring students, supporting young academics, and fostering innovations that will shape the future of Biomedical Engineering both within FUTO and across Nigeria.
