WHO TAKES OVER FROM GOVERNOR HOPE UZODIMMA?

Since the creation of Imo State in 1976, the state has been governed by several military administrators and civilian governors. During the military era, leaders were appointed, and the people had no opportunity to choose who governed them. Democracy, however, gives citizens the right to elect their leaders and participate in determining the direction of the state.

Since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, Imo State has produced governors from its three senatorial zones: Owerri, Okigwe, and Orlu. However, the amount of time each zone has occupied the governorship position has been significantly unequal.

Owerri Zone governed the state for approximately seven months under His Excellency Emeka Ihedioha. Okigwe Zone governed for four years under His Excellency Ikedi Ohakim. By the end of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, Orlu Zone will have governed Imo State for a combined total of 24 years through His Excellency Achike Udenwa, His Excellency Rochas Okorocha, and His Excellency Hope Uzodimma.

In the interest of fairness, equity, and political inclusion, the other zones should be given an opportunity to govern the state. Some people have argued that the next governor should be chosen solely on the basis of competence, regardless of the candidate’s zone. While competence, character, and capacity must remain essential requirements, no zone has a monopoly on qualified and capable leaders. Every zone in Imo State has men and women with the experience, integrity, and vision required to govern effectively.

Many states in the Southeast and other parts of Nigeria recognize the importance of rotating political power. Even within the major political parties, key positions are often distributed among different regions to promote balance, fairness, and inclusion.

The people of the Southeast have consistently spoken against their political marginalization in Nigeria, particularly their exclusion from the presidency. We cannot demand fairness and equitable power rotation at the national level while ignoring the same principles within Imo State.

After 24 years of leadership from Orlu Zone, fairness demands that the next governor should come from either Owerri Zone or Okigwe Zone. This is not an argument against the people of Orlu Zone. It is a call for justice, balance, and a sense of belonging among all the people of Imo State.

No zone was born to rule Imo State permanently. The governorship belongs to the entire state, and every zone deserves a fair opportunity to provide leadership.

As we consider who should succeed Governor Hope Uzodimma, we must insist on both equity and competence. Imo State needs a governor of sound character, proven capacity, and genuine commitment to the welfare and development of our people. This time, that opportunity should be given to Owerri Zone or Okigwe Zone.
