Peacebuilding, Conflict Resolution: AFA, AWDF Call For Women inclusion

By Anyi Lemchi
Stakeholders in Imo State have commenced the process of drafting a policy that would encourage active women involvement in peace building, conflict prevention, resolution and security initiatives in the state.
The initiative, facilitated by Alliances for Africa (AfA), with support from African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF),  according to the organizers, aimed to localize Nigeria’s 3rd National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (NAP) through the development of a State Action Plan (SAP) in Imo State.
Speaking at the inception meeting of the policy drafting committee, held in Owerri, weekend, AFA Executive Director, Ms. Ihuoma Obibi said, “the goal is to strengthen women’s leadership capacity, support their active role in community peacebuilding, and ensure their meaningful participation in conflict prevention, resolution, and post-conflict governance.”
Obibi, represented by a board member, Prince Sam Ezeanyika charged the stakeholders including community leaders, government officials, heads of Civil Society Organizations, leaders of human rights women and youths groups, media practitioners, among others to actively participate towards achieving the goal, adding, “our mission is to ensure that women’s voices are at the forefront of peace and security discussions at the local level.”
Also outlining the objectives of the project, AFA Director of Programmes, Ms. Blessing Duru said the policy, when drafted and adopted, would among other benefits, enhance participation of women and gender-diverse groups in local peacebuilding and security efforts, resulting in measurable growth in women’s leadership and influence within community decision-making processes and gender- responsive strategies.
According to  Duru, “United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR 1325) adopted in 2000, recognizes the critical role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations and post conflict reconstruction”.

She emphasized the need for the inclusion of women in all levels of decision making related to Peace and security.
“meaningful participation of women in peace and security dialogues at the local level is critical to achieving inclusive, sustainable solutions. Their lived experiences, unique perspectives, and leadership capacities are essential in shaping policies that address the root causes of conflict, gender-based violence, and social exclusion.”
“Ensuring women’s voices are heard and valued not only upholds their rights but also strengthens community resilience, fosters accountability, and promotes long-term peace and development.” she added.
The Committee comprised representatives from the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, National Human Rights Commission, National Orientation Agency, NOA, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, security agencies, Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, National Council of Women Society, NCWS, among others.
