2) CHIEF DENNIS OKWU( SWEET APPLE) If the race was that of popularity, Sweet Apple will predictably be amongst the topmost contenders on this list.
A very popular figure in Ikeduru and Imo State Politics. He has always been touted as the ‘great Hope’ in all his previous political ventures. He has unfortunately ran for many elective posts unsuccessfully including a three times attempt to win Ikeduru State House of Assemble seat. The last being when he was surprisingly defeated by an unyielding and determined newcomer in the name of Sunny-Unachukwu John. Who in a show of superior strategies defeated him in the PDP House of Assembly primaries in 2022 despite having his Godfather Samdaddy handpicking all elective delegates with the instructions to stop Sunny-Unachukwu at all costs.
The politically well experienced Chief from Uzoagba Ikeduru is not a man to write off and may spring a surprise considering his newfound sponsorship boost. The paradox of his candidacy would be that his popularity has not translated to his abilities to win. Many attribute his failures to his non decisive nature as he has been in the ‘political bed’ with many players from different political structure in Imo State at different electioneering periods which surprisingly has not catapulted his him to a new political height. However, his new association with the Mazi led APP in Imo State has bolstered his confidence to the extent that he fancies that he can win the House of Representative office and has declared to challenge the incumbent for the seat.
His advantages lies in his old alliances which he can activate at anytime to help him campaign. But that could also be his undoing as his switching loyalty may prevent some of his past associates to pitch tent with him now that he needs them most.
3) RT. HON. OKEY ONYEKAMMMA: A lawyer and former Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly during Emeka Ihedioha’s tenure, he is regarded by many as highly experienced and strategic. Onyekanmma has an extensive background as an aide to the late Pan African Parliament Speaker and Mbaike Federal House Representative, Bethel Anyanwu. His experiences as a former parliamentarian, combined with his legislative skills as a lawyer, distinguishes him as a formidable challenger for the incumbent. Many consider him overqualified for the position and are suggesting he could be a strong candidate for the senatorial position for Owerri Zone.
However, if he chooses to run for the House of Representatives, his main challenge would be that he hails from Mbaitoli LGA. The Mbaike Representative slot rotates between Mbaitoli and Ikeduru, and the current cycle favors Ikeduru candidates.
4) SUNNY-UNACHIKWU JOHN : A Foreign trained lawyer and businessman, he is considered a superb grassroots organizer. The Iho, Ikeduru-born politician entered Mbaike’s political scene in remarkable fashion. Upon returning from abroad, he quickly battled and defeated the more experienced political powerhouse, Chief Dennis Okwu (Sweet Apple), for the PDP candidacy for Ikeduru State House of Assembly. He accomplished this against the odds by soundly defeating Sweet Apple, who was handpicked and backed by the then PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Samdaddy), in one of the most fiercely contested races for a House of Assembly seat in the history of PDP in Imo State. His community Organizing experiences in leadership of Nigerian, Igbo and Imo state communities in the diaspora surely gave him the organisational edge to outmaneuvers his opponents.
Rumours suggest that he is preparing to challenge the incumbent on the ADC platform, and with his anticipated announcement, many believe he may be the candidate capable of mustering the capacity and tenacity needed to unseat an incumbent of Akarachi Amadi’s caliber. Should he declare his availability to run for the Federal House, it will surely cause a lot of discomfort for many candidates and the incumbent will surely note that he has real competition.
His amiable nature and popularity among youth and women are his greatest strengths. Many however count his brief stint in the business of politics in Nigeria as his weakness.
