Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown Revives  GSS Akwakuma Library 

In order to encourage academic excellence and good conduct among children, Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown, has revived a library at Girls Secondary School Akwakuma, Owerri North Local Government Area, Imo State.
Speaking during the official unveiling of the refurbished library, President of Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown, Rtn Cajetan Osuagwu, said the feat was aimed at spurring the students to study hard in a safe, serene and conducive environment.
Osuagwu observed that the library is now wearing new good look as doors, windows and chairs were fixed including painting the whole library, a feat he said is targeted at enticing students to study, do some research to help them navigate their future successfully.
“Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown came in, renovated the library at Girls Secondary School Akwakuma, we fixed windows, doors, chairs, painted the whole place. That is what Rotary Club does for society. Because we want students to study. We have also done wonderful things in the past. We organized seminar on entrepreneurship and taught the students how to produce soaps, detergents, perfumes as to help them remain economically relevant after graduation. We will continue to do more in the school and elsewhere in the state”, the President stressed.
Osuagwu who expressed delight over the project completion, thanked members of Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown for their determined effort in achieving the renovation project of the library.
The event which was tagged Basic Education and Literacy Project, featured the Commissioning of Renovated School Library and Discuss on Career Plan, Character Education, Sex Education/Protect a Girl Child. The discussion was taken by Rtn Barr Innocent Igboanugo and Dr Sebastian Okwu (District PolioPlus Chair DG142).
Speaking on Career Plan, Rtn Barr Innocent Igboanugo, advised the students to set their goals aright, pursue them vigorously to be able to achieve them and become successful to themselves, families, community and society. “The society needs you to be successful in life, so that you help people to overcome poverty. Dream high to be the best, know your skills, your values, interests, do not allow anybody to discourage you in the pursuit of your career. Have a good career plan, make a good career decision to succeed in life”.
Discussing on “Character, Education and Drug, Dr Sebastian Okwu, said, for the students to achieve great heights in education, “they must be positive in character and action, be courageous, compassionate, courageous, creative, flexible, patient and persistent, modest, humble, honorable, have integrity, discipline to enable you modify your plans to greatness”.
Okwu maintained that education socializes students by equipping them with skills to be productive citizens, urging them to shun consumption of hard drugs, excessive use of alcohol to live healthy, become useful to themselves and the society, charging them to discard mingling with their peers who take drugs, alcohol and live waywardly.
Also, he urged parents and teachers to help their children and students to overcome these anti social behaviors to become responsible citizens.
Just as Rtn Uche Oguwike, Rtn Dr Victor C. Onukwugha (Past District Governor, Rotary Intl, District 9125), Rtn Amaka Ogudo (PRO), Rtn Tony Opara, among others, assured that the club would continue to render quality services to the society.
Earlier in her remarks, Rtn Nneka Ewenike, who was Committee Chair of the event, who celebrated her birthday with the students, advised girls to be wise, say no to premarital sex as such may destroy their career, hinting that the project was part of the club’s contribution to the society, starting with Girls Secondary School Akwakuma. “Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown has 7 areas of focus which Basic Education and Literary are among”.
With Principals of the school appreciating Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown for the project and promised to continue to guide and imbue students with morality and academic excellence.
However, the students through Interactor Udunna Chinasa Nancy (President of GSSA Interact Club) promised to enliven good conduct and hardwork they were taught in order to become useful and responsible.
