The International President of De Norsemen Kclub International (DNKI), Amb. Dr. Aniekanabasi Paulinus Alban, has called on the Rivers State Government to urgently address the persistent flooding affecting Port Harcourt, warning that the situation has displaced residents, damaged businesses, disrupted livelihoods and created serious environmental concerns.
Dr. Alban made the call while addressing journalists at the Victor Attah international airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during his visit to the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of De Norsemen Kclub International, as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In his Independence Day message to Noble Norsemen across the world and Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, the DNKI leader stressed the need for unity, responsible leadership, accountability and renewed commitment to national development.
He described Independence Day as more than a celebration of freedom, noting that it also represents a collective responsibility to build a country where justice, peace, dignity and economic opportunities are available to all citizens.
According to him, the true meaning of independence must be reflected in the protection of human dignity, the promotion of social justice and the willingness of leaders and institutions to respond effectively to the needs of ordinary Nigerians.
Flooding: DNKI President Demands Urgent Government Intervention
Addressing the flooding situation in Port Harcourt and surrounding communities, Dr. Alban expressed concern over the reported hardship faced by residents whose homes and businesses have been affected.
He noted that beyond the immediate destruction of property, flooding poses significant challenges to livelihoods, sanitation, environmental protection and public health, particularly where floodwater mixes with accumulated waste and contaminated water.
The DNKI International President called on the Rivers State Government to treat the situation as an urgent humanitarian and environmental priority, rather than allowing affected communities to continue bearing the burden alone.
He urged the government to undertake an emergency assessment of the worst-affected areas, provide relief and temporary shelter for displaced residents, and introduce appropriate recovery support for businesses and households that have suffered losses.
Dr. Alban also advocated comprehensive drainage rehabilitation, improved stormwater infrastructure, effective waste management and a thorough investigation into the underlying causes of recurrent flooding.
He further called for a sustainable flood-management strategy that would strengthen urban planning, protect natural waterways, improve emergency preparedness and reduce the risk of future disasters.
The DNKI leader emphasised the importance of collaboration between the state government, local authorities, environmental experts, emergency agencies and community stakeholders in developing lasting solutions.
“The people of Rivers State deserve an environment in which they can live, work, raise their families and conduct their businesses without the recurring fear of devastating floods,” he said in his Independence Anniversary message.
He maintained that protecting lives, preserving livelihoods and safeguarding the environment are essential responsibilities that require decisive action and sustained government commitment.
Calls for Unity and Responsible Leadership
Beyond the flooding crisis, Dr. Alban used the occasion to call on Noble Norsemen worldwide to remain committed to the ideals of brotherhood, integrity, discipline, peace and selfless service.
He urged members of the organisation to serve as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria and DNKI in their respective communities and countries, stressing that the strength of the brotherhood should be measured by its positive contributions to society.
According to him, the organisation’s guiding principle, “DOOTY IZT DOOTY — SERVICE TO HUMANITY,” must be demonstrated through practical actions that support vulnerable people, promote justice and contribute to community development.
He said patriotism should go beyond words and celebrations, requiring citizens and institutions to work collectively towards addressing the country’s challenges.
Dr. Alban further called for national unity, accountability, responsible leadership and peaceful coexistence, noting that Nigeria’s progress depends on the willingness of its people and institutions to embrace their shared responsibilities.
He encouraged Norsemen to reject division, strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and contribute meaningfully to the welfare of humanity, irrespective of geographical location.
“Our Service Must Make a Lasting Impact”
Reflecting on the significance of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, the DNKI International President said the occasion should renew the country’s commitment to justice, economic opportunity, environmental protection and effective leadership.
He also urged Nigerians to remember citizens facing hardship, displacement, insecurity and economic difficulties, maintaining that their circumstances should inspire greater compassion and purposeful action.
Dr. Alban reaffirmed DNKI’s commitment to brotherhood, integrity, responsible leadership and service to humanity, expressing hope that the anniversary would inspire renewed confidence in Nigeria’s future and stronger unity within the organisation.
He concluded by extending Independence Day greetings to Nigerians at home and abroad, as well as to Noble Norsemen across the globe.
“Our brotherhood must stand for something greater than ourselves. Our nation must offer hope to its people. And our service must leave a lasting positive impact on humanity,” he stated.
The DNKI International President closed his message with the organisation’s familiar calls: “DOOTY IZT DOOTY — SERVICE TO HUMANITY,” “KEEP HOPE ALIVE,” and “MAKE DNKI GREAT.”
He wished Nigeria continued progress and reaffirmed his commitment to a more united, peaceful and prosperous nation.
