Nigeria at 66: Former Imo Governor Dr. Ikedi Ohakim Hails Nation, Urges Citizens to Be Prayerful

As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the former Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, has congratulated the nation and called on citizens to remain prayerful, united and hopeful amid the country’s challenges and opportunities.
In a goodwill message released on the anniversary, Ohakim praised Nigeria’s resilience and enduring spirit since gaining independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. He described the milestone as a moment for national reflection, gratitude and renewed commitment to the ideals of unity, justice and progress that inspired the founding fathers.
“Nigeria at 66 is a testament to the indomitable will of our people,” Ohakim said. “Through decades of trials, triumphs, transitions and transformations, the Nigerian spirit has remained unbroken. We have every reason to hail our great nation and give thanks for the journey so far.”
The former governor, who served Imo State from 2007 to 2011, urged Nigerians across the country and in the diaspora to embrace a posture of prayerfulness, especially at a time when the Federal Government has opted for a low-key celebration focused on reflection rather than elaborate festivities. He stressed that prayer, coupled with hard work, patriotism and collective responsibility, remains essential for overcoming current socio-economic and security challenges and consolidating the gains of recent reforms.
Ohakim recalled the sacrifices of nationalists such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Sir Ahmadu Bello, noting that their vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria continues to inspire successive generations. He encouraged leaders at all levels and ordinary citizens to prioritise peace, inclusive development and good governance so that the promise of independence can be fully realised for the youth and future generations.
The message comes as the nation observes a series of pre-anniversary activities, including interdenominational services and a public lecture, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s expected nationwide Independence broadcast. The official theme for the 66th anniversary centres on consolidating reforms toward stability and shared prosperity.
Ohakim, a businessman-turned-politician and recipient of the Grand Service Star of Imo State, has consistently used such national and state anniversaries to advocate unity and people-centred leadership. His latest intervention underscores a familiar call in Nigerian public discourse: that while policy and leadership matter, the spiritual and moral foundations of the nation must not be neglected.
As green-and-white flags fly once more across the country, Ohakim’s message adds to the chorus of voices urging Nigerians to mark the 66th anniversary not only with celebration but with sober reflection, prayer and a shared resolve to build a stronger, more united Nigeria.
